Bango’s Minute: The Big Ragu and Wing Depth

Hello everybody, welcome to today’s edition of Bango’s Minute. I quickly wanted to say that Bango’s Minute isn’t going to be a weekly review of Buck’s games. Bango’s Minute is going to become a bi-weekly article on something that is related to the Bucks. Enjoy!

Bango’s Minute – The Big Ragu and Wing Depth

Bucks Nation

“The redhead kid with the nickname Big Ragu came off the bench to make five 3s and score 31 points,” said the Associated Press, following the 2018 NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship Game. Donte DiVincenzo, after just being named the Big East Conference Sixth Man of the Year as a sophomore, had just lead Villanova past Michigan to win the national championship. However, the accolades weren’t finished coming in for DiVincenzo. He would shortly learn that he was named the Final Four Most-Outstanding-Player. Now, Donte had a tough decision to make. Should he stay at Villanova for his junior season, or should he declare for the NBA Draft. Donte eventually decided on the latter of the two options.

Donte would originally declare for the draft without hiring an agent, but he did hire one, meaning that he could not back out and go back to college. On June 21st, 2018, Donte DiVincenzo waited for his name to be called by Adam Silver. With the 17th pick in the Draft, DiVincenzo was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks. Coming off of a heartbreaking 3-4 loss in the first round at the hands of the Boston Celtics, Milwaukee had some pieces at the 1 and 2 guard, but not many players that would greatly affect the game. Besides Eric Bledsoe and Malcom Brogdon, the only other notable guards were Matthew Dellavoadova, a young Sterling Brown, a washed up Jason Terry, and a below average player in Tony Snell. Me, and many other Bucks fans thought that Donte would be a vital piece in helping the Bucks improve to somewhere around the five seed. However, the Bucks would do much better that the five seed, recording 60 wins and 22 losses, and earning the #1 seed. Donte looked like he would be a bust after this season. In 27 games, Donte would average just under 5 points per game. But, maybe it was just because of the depth that the Bucks had coming into this season. Eric Bledsoe and Malcom Brogdon were both solid starters. Sterling Brown had blossomed into a good second string player, and George Hill was a great fit on the team as a consistent role player that the Bucks got after trading Matthew Dellavadova early on in the season. However, the Bucks lost Brogdon in the off-season in a Sign & Trade with the Pacers, where Milawukee received two draft picks. Heading into this season, the Bucks had signed Kyle Korver and Wesley Matthews. And I had given up on Donte DiVincenzo.

However, this season, has looked different. Through 33 games, Donte has been averaging 8 points, 4 ½ rebounds, and just over two assists. Donte has even been getting good minutes. He comes off of the bench as one of the first subs most games, but he has also been one of Coach Bud’s first choices to fill in as a starter, when players like Eric Bledsoe or Wesley Matthews are out. That’s impressive, considering how deep the Bucks are at the two guard positions. This brings me into my next topic. The Bucks have great wing depth.

Eric Bledsoe is a solid starter, dropping 27 points against the Lakers, recently. (Check out BucksNation.com, the best source on the internet for everything Bucks, for in depth, stats, highlights, and reviews of every single Bucks game.) Jon Horst also found two solid bench pieces, in Wesley Matthews and Kyle Korver, to replace Malcom Brogdon in the summer. Not to mention George Hill, who is still playing at a high level compared to other role players around his age. Sterling Brown however, has not been playing nearly as much, but still looks like a promising, young piece for the Buck’s organization. This wing depth will finally give something that the Bucks can look at for drafting purposes. If the roster stays the same (which it may not, you may see a trade for somebody like CJ McCollum around the trade deadline), the Bucks can focus on a true center, or power forward to come off of the bench. Besides Giannis and Brook, we only have two other players at the 4 and the 5, in older players (but still good) Ersan Illyasova and Robin Lopez.

Thank You for Reading this week’s edition of Bango’s Minute, and go Bucks!

Jrue Holiday To Milwaukee Bucks Trade Scenario

This trade would give the Bucks an elite guard in Jrue Holiday, a good 2 way player in Josh Hart well giving the New Orleans Pelicans a solid starting point guard and some nice young pieces. I would suggest that the Bucks would also need to add a first round draft pick to make this work.

The Road to the Championship – Take 2

The Bucks faithful, still licking their wounds after a heart-breaking conference finals
exit, have another winning season to look forward to. The balance of power may
now clearly be back in the Western Conference, but Milwaukee has the inside track
to making it to the NBA Finals, and- from there- it’s anyone’s title.

While the Bucks have lost Brogdon, they still are ranked #1 in the East in most
current projections- with the 76ers coming in right behind them. The most
important add for the Bucks has been the subtraction of Kawhi Leonard- the man
who single-handedly beat the Bucks and then also Golden State. Leonard was a
man on a mission, and nobody in Milwaukee will miss him.

Milwaukee Bucks Season Preview
ClutchPoints

Many people ask: Is there enough talent on this team aside from Giannis to win
the NBA title? I argue that there is. Giannis needs to have a repeat, or slightly
better year, than his 2019 MVP season. There is no reason to expect anything less.

The surrounding teammates include Middleton, Bledsoe, and then several other
“bit” players that are each good for 10-12 PPG. That said, there are a couple
players with some relevant upside, including Pat Connaughton- who had a couple of
excellent games in the recent playoffs.

Defensively, Milwaukee should continue to be one of the best teams in the East.
Some of this has to do with having an excellent offense and constantly putting
pressure on the opposing team to score over 100 points.

Losing Brogdon, an excellent shooter, will hurt. There is no question about that.
But Coach-of-the-Year Budenholzer will do all he can to shore up the rest of the
offense, by giving his players their best chance on the court.

Barring a significant GM-directed upgrade, Milwaukee is poised to win the East and
take their chance against an excellent team from LA- be it the Lakers or the
Clippers. It would not surprise me if the Bucks are forced to get past Leonard
again, but this time in the NBA Finals. Let’s hope for a little better series from Antetokounmpo, and a much better series from Bledsoe. That coupled with a non-
Herculean few games from Kawhi could very well spell the first Bucks championship in 49 years.

Mike Budenholzer’s Dog House

As of January 20, 2019 these four members of the Milwaukee Bucks find themselves in Coach Buds Dog House! This post is not at all meant to question or direst a man thats already proven himself to be a great Bucks coach. As of this date the Bucks currently have the best record in the NBA and the roster is performing like never seen before.

Mike Budenholzer's Dog House
Twitter.com/BucksNationCom

Rookie Donte Divincenzo finds himself unable to make much of an impression so far this season as playing time has been limited since the start of the regular season. He’s bouncing back and forth from the Bucks to the Wisconsin Herd so that he can get some in game, on court action in.

Jason Smith came over with George Hill in the trade that send Matthew Dellavedova and John Henson to Cleveland. The trade was designed to shed cap space and provide the Bucks with much needed flexibility in this summers free agent market. Smith was basically a throw in and a player that made the cap numbers work to pull off the deal and has been a bench warming cheer leader so far and unable to clock any mins but garbage time ones.

Christian Wood dominated Summer League and the NBA D Leauge but has not been able to find a fair chance to see if his performances could be duplicated in real NBA action with this Milwaukee Bucks team. Fans love whenever he gets on the court but is still waiting to be unleashed and let out of Coach buds Dig House.

Pat Connaughton looked like a solid signing this offseason for the Bucks. Pat played some good mins for the Portland Trailblazers last season providing defense, hustle and outside shooting. So far with the Bucks his performance has been up and down and its lead to Coach Bud placing him in the Dog House and only pulling him out from time to time only send him right back into it after blown assignments and air balls.

This Week: 4/5 Stars

Off of the Court – Bucks FUN FACTS:

Welcome to the first of two new segments… Bucks Fun Facts! In this week’s issue, we have wack facts about the Greek Freak, Giannis Antetokounmpo

Number 1 – Athletic Siblings:

Giannis has four brothers; Francis (European Soccer Player), Thenasis (European Basketball Player), Kostas (Dallas Mavericks), and Alexandros (Dominican Knights, HS in Wisconsin).

Number 2 – American Food!

Giannis has been posting hilarious things on social media, about him trying American food. He started out praising “American Red Kool Aid”. He said, “Just had my first sip of American Red Kool Aid while watching the game. It’s extremely tasty. America stay blessed.” There was also the time he was thankful for having corn dogs his life. “Just tried a corndog for the first time…Man God Bless America!” Giannis also took to Twitter in 2014, after he tried a smoothie for the first time. “I just taste for the first time a smoothie..MAN GOD BLESS AMERICA.”

Number 3 – Greece:

Giannis was born in Athens, Greece. When he was young, his and his brothers had to sell watches, toys, and other things, just to support his family.

Number 4 – Freakish Athleticism:

The Greek Freak, is a Freak of Nature! He is 6’11”, and can play almost any position, not to mention his 12’2” vertical. Giannis has 12” hands! Only Boban of the Clippers has bigger hands than him! Giannis is super Athletic on top of that. No one can stop the Freak!

Number 5 – NBA Accolades

Giannis has won many awards so far in his promising career. In 2017 and 2018, he was put on the All-NbA Second Team. He has won Player of the Month twice, and Player of the Week five times! In 2014, he was on All-Rookie Second Team. In 2017 he took Most Improved Player, and a spot on All-Defensive Second Team. He even won the fan vote for 2017-18 Dunk of the Year!

On the Block – Bucks Rumors:

What’s going on with Khris Middleton? Coach Bud sat Khris Middleton during (nearly) the entire 4th Quarter and Overtime Period in the Buck’s OT loss at the Garden. Coach Bud, said that this was due to Khris’s lack of defense. Khris did not play against Detroit, but there are rumors floating around that there is currently lots of tension between Khris and the staff. He played against the Warriors at home on Friday Night.

Bucks Stories:

The Evolution of the Bucks-and our Nike Jerseys.

Ever since Nike took over the job of making the jerseys for all NBA teams last season, the Milwaukee Bucks have been wearing some pretty cool threads. First off, Nike renamed our home and away jerseys, Icon and Association. Our home jerseys, white with the word “Bucks” on the front, and our green away jerseys, reading “Milwaukee”. Nike’s next move was to release three jerseys throughout the season. Our Classic Jerseys, a nice mixture of some of our older jerseys from the twentieth century, our Statement Jerseys, black with our logo on the front, and the 2017-18 city jersey. The City Jersey (which we now have a new edition of) for that season was called “The Cream City Jersey”. The jersey was all cream, with the stripes of our team’s colors running through it. This season, we have not got another look at the Classic Jersey yet, and we have showed off our new City Edition. This year’s nickname “The MECCA” (Milwaukee Exposition, Convention Center and Arena). The jersey features some of the team’s colors from the old court on the MECCA, which they actually made a return to last season! The new Milwaukee Bucks jerseys, provided by Nike, are an art form!

Thanks for joining us this week, can’t wait to see all of the responses we receive.

The Week: 3/5 Stars

Hot Takes:

The Milwaukee Bucks are RE-INVENTING HOOPS! Well, mainly in two categories.

Thing one, the Bucks are not on the “Small Ball” bandwagon. In fact, you could even say we are on the “Tall Ball” bandwagon. The cool thing about it, is the fact that is works! Sure we have a small player in Pat Connaughton coming off of the bench, but he makes up for it with his 44” vertical. Thing two. The Bucks are my built around all stars, but they can compete with teams that are. Let’s use the Golden State Warriors as an example. They are built around there all star starting five. Sure if one of them goes off they can win games, but how well well they work together when all five of them are healthy? So far we seem flights suspensions and losses to terrible teams. The Milwaukee box on the other hand only had one superstar and an all star and Khris Middleton. Thing that’s exciting however, is that it works for the Bucks! With Coach Mike Budenholzer system, the Bucks can create mismatches, draw the double-team to Giannis, and kick it out to players like Khris. Not having an, all star full team does not make the Bucks a bad team.

On the Block – Bucks Rumors:

Here is your rundown on Bucks rumors.

Khris Middleton Free Agency News

Khris Middleton has one more guaranteed year on his contract. This offseason, Khris will have a player option on his contract. Rumors say that the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, New York Knicks, Portland Trail Blazers, and Cleveland Cavaliers will be targeting Middleton this offseason. We all hope, that Khris will decide to re-up with the Bucks.

Kyle Korver Trade

The Milwaukee Bucks, along with the Philadelphia 76ers, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Los Angeles Lakers, had shown some interest in Kyle Korver of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Korver has two more years remaining on his contract. Korver is 37 years old and is averaging 5.7 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 1 assist per game in the 2018-19 season. He was just traded to the Utah Jazz for two second rounders and Alec Burks.

Question of the Week:

How much money would you give up to retain Khris Middleton this offseason?

Respond to the question with a creative answer at bangosminute@gmail.com for a chance to be featured in the next article!

Transaction Rundown:

November 24 – Bucks Waive Jodie Meeks

In the offseason, the Milwaukee Bucks acquired Jodie Meeks from the Washington Wizards. The Bucks received cash, and a Washington 2nd Round Pick. Jodie Meeks received a 25 game suspension from the NBA, due to a violation of their drug program. The Bucks acquired him with 19 games remaining on the suspension, planning to waive him.

After a week of Bucks hoops, here are some changes I would like to see:

A player to target:

40 – F – Harrison Barnes (DAL)

Wouldn’t it be nice if the Bucks could add one more player that is a true forward, that would be nice. We have The Greek Freak, and Kash. Tony Snell and Turkish Thunder come off of the bench, but that is about it. Sure, Christian Wood and DJ Wilson are Bucks, but they play more for the Herd than the Bucks. We have 3 centers that play, and 5 guards that play when everybody is healthy. It would be interesting to see if we could work out a deal to receive Harrison Barnes. He is a pretty good scorer (not to mention he is very efficient) and is average on the defensive end. Overall, he would be a solid piece to add to the roster.

A player to remove:

23 – G/F – Sterling Brown

It’s not that I think the Bucks need to remove Sterling from the roster, I just think they need to remove him from the lineup. During crunch-time, Brown is getting minutes. Sure, with coach Bud’s system, the rotation is spread out, not depending on his starters. However, I would rather play Chris Wood (or others) in times when the game is within 5 points. Sterling is developing, but I would love to see others get some playing time.

A kid to scout:

Bucks Trade Up – Kevin Porter Jr.

Bucks Stay Put – DeAndre Hunter

With Kevin Porter, it looks like he might have a knack for defense, averaging over 1 steal and 1 block per game for the USC Trojans. Porter is only averaging 2 assists per game. If he could focus more on spreading the ball around, it would help. Imagine a young kid coming in and sending the ball down court after a big takeaway, to Giannis, Eric, or Khris, all great at making plays in transition. If the Bucks don’t move around in the draft, DeAndre Hunter of the Virginia Cavaliers may be a safe bet. Hunter is a great all-around player that was a big part of last year’s success for his university. He is an aggressive team player that is averaging 16.8 PPG. Both would be great fits for the team.

An in-game adjustment:

Don’t Play from behind

Let’s look at the Bucks game this week against Charlotte. The Bucks started off great, but as the game went on, the Hornets went on a scoring run. The Bucks were able to make a comeback late, but they were in too deep of a hole to retake the lead. This game has not been our only case of falling behind. In our first game against the Bulls, the exact thing happened. If the Bucks want to get closer to the Toronto Raptors, and get closer to the one seed in the Eastern Conference, we need to be in games at all times (unless we are running away with it).

Thanks for joining us this week, can’t wait to see all of the responses we receive.

The Underrated Off-Season Signing Of Brook Lopez

Paying big dividends: Brook Lopez is Looking Like One of the NBA’s Most Underrated Pickups of the Off-season

Space and pace. That’s what the modern NBA is all about. For years, the Bucks have struggled to adapt to this style that has taken the league by storm. Sure, a great deal of that was due to the beliefs of our former head coach, but the team also lacked the three-point threats to make the system work. This year, we’re seeing a floor-stretching offensive juggernaut, made possible in no small part by off-season pickup Brook Lopez.

Increased Productivity

It’s no secret that the Bucks have struggled to get any meaningful contributions from the center position over the past few years, but Lopez is already showing that the team won’t have that problem this season. Over the first few games, the big man is averaging 12.4 PPG and shooting a blazing 38.6 percent from three-point land. Granted, he still isn’t a great rebounder (nor has he ever been confused with one), but in the Bucks scheme encourages players to push the ball up court on missed shots, meaning there’s a case to be made for allowing Giannis, Middleton, Bledsoe and Brogdon to run to loose balls and start the break the same way the Thunder do with Russell Westbrook.

Brook Lopez The Underrated Off-Season Signing
ClutchPoints

Evolving the Offense

Did we mention Lopez is knocking down 38.6 percent of his triples? Yes. we did. But that cannot be overstated, especially when he is draining more than two per night.

Lopez’s ability to stretch the floor is something Bucks have been sorely missing in previous seasons, especially with a superstar who isn’t much of a three-point threat. His mere presence allows Giannis more room to operate in the paint and removes a help defender when he chooses to drive. It doesn’t show up in the box score, but providing your best player more room to operate is one of the most valuable contributions a teammate can make.

In addition to spacing the floor, Lopez gives the Bucks something else they’ve been missing: a solid screen-setter. He uses his incredibly large, muscular frame to lay a body on opposing defenders, forcing them fight through the pick, or more likely, get hung up, leading to mismatches and open shooters.

A Fantastic Fit

Lopez wasn’t a highly sought after free agent, but he has found a place in Mike Budenholzer’s system that allows him to maximize his strengths and the early returns have been overwhelmingly positive.

His ability to space the floor and set effective screens has helped the offensive scheme and allowed Giannis to take his game to next level, establishing himself as a serious contender to win MVP. Not bad for a guy who is playing for the mid-level exception.

Bucks N’ Brewers: Milwaukee Symmetry

I would assert that it is fair to assume that most Bucks fan are Brewers fans
as well. I know I am. As the Brewers were playing a crucial Game 6 in the National
League Championship Series, I couldn’t help but to check in on the Bucks home
opener during the commercials of the Brewers. As I switched back and forth
between the two channels I couldn’t help but realize that the Bucks team is built very
similarly to the Brewers. Look at the similarities. The Bucks were bounced from the
playoffs in the first round last year. The Brewers were one game away from the
playoffs, and likely would have suffered the same fate. Both teams knew they were
very close to the next tier of competition, and both signed multiple free agents the
following offseason.

Cait Covers The Bases

The Bucks signed Ersan Ilyasova, a solid veteran player who started his NBA
career as a Buck. The Brewers signed Lorenzo Cain, a solid veteran player who
began his career as a Brewer. The Bucks added Brook Lopez, a player who put up
great numbers on a bad team, the Nets, and is therefore overlooked. He averaged
18.7 points per game over the last 10 seasons, and has never played on a serious
team with a great system like the Bucks. The Brewers added Christian Yelich, a
player that put up good numbers for a bad team, the Marlins, and was therefore
overlooked. His career batting average is 290, excluding this past year with the
Brewers. Averaging almost 19 points per game in the NBA is very similar to batting
290 in the MLB. Both were very solid contributors but not the cornerstones of their
teams, Lopez being overshadowed by Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, and Deangelo
Russell, and Yelich being overshadowed by Giancarlo Stanton and Marcell Ozuna.

OnMilwaukee

In addition to the offseason acquisitions, both teams were not considered
serious contenders. ESPN’s preseason predictions for the 2018 MLB season, ranked
the Brewers tenth, behind the Cubs and Cardinals. They predicted we would have a
record of 85-77 and would likely miss the playoffs. Contrary to experts predictions,
we fended off a late season push byn the Cardinals and chased down the $200
million payroll Cubs, defeating them in an extra Game 163 to win the Central Division.
We proved everybody wrong by finishing 96-67 and taking the NLCS to 7 games. A
similar rating was given to the Bucks during ESPN’s preseason NBA predictions. They
slotted the Bucks as the 9th best team in the league, predicting a 47-35 season and
an early round exit in the playoffs. Not only is this prediction wrong, it’s frankly
insulting. This team added several exciting pieces through free agency and the draft,
but it’s most important acquisition was Mike Budenholzer, the new coach. Coach Bud
is exactly the steady hand we need to guide this team deep into the playoffs. I
strongly believe the Bucks absolutely have what it takes to make it the the Eastern
Conference Finals, the equivalent depth that the Brewers made it to.

No matter what sport we’re competing in, Milwaukee teams will always be
underdogs. We will never have the same spotlights as the Cubs or Bulls, but we have
something far more valuable: a community of fans that are passionate about
Milwaukee sports. We love our Bucks and we love our Brewers. In fact, the Bucks
exciting season starting is the only thing bringing me out of my post NLCS
depression. Ultimately, the only difference I see this year between the Bucks season
and Brewers season is that I believe the Bucks will win the Eastern Conference Final
and make it to the NBA Finals, one step further than the Brewers made it during their
great run. If the Bucks don’t make it, at least I’ll still have the Brewers to pick me up.
-Go Bucks (and Brewers)!

Predicting the Rematch: Bucks vs Celtics Playoff Preview

As the NBA season gets underway, avid basketball fans are already looking ahead to the playoffs next spring. While another Golden State championship appears to be the most likely outcome, the path to the finals is full of new twists and turns this year, particularly in the East. The Eastern Conference got weaker this past offseason; no matter how you slice it, LeBron James’ move West was a dramatic power shift. For the first time in nearly a decade, the road to the Finals in the East no longer runs through a LeBron-led Cleveland or Miami squad. The door is wide open for new challengers, including a Bucks team that is both improved and hungry after last year’s playoff hopes ended in the first round. They came out on the losing end of a 7-game dogfight against the Boston Celtics, who went on to eliminate Philadelphia in 5 games before eventually losing to LeBron’s Cavaliers in the Conference Finals.

In the early stages of the 2018-19 season, the Bucks project as a 3 or 4 seed in the East, most likely behind Boston, Philadelphia and Toronto. If the Bucks and Celtics are to meet again in the playoffs next spring, the matchup will likely take place in the conference semi-finals, if not later. Expect both higher stakes and a revival of any bad blood left over from last year’s series. Today we’re diving in to look at how both teams would fare in a 2019 rematch based on offseason personnel changes and what we’ve seen so far in this young NBA season.

For Boston, the biggest personnel changes are not to the roster, but simply involve getting star players Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward healthy and integrated into the offense. This was a deep team last year whose depth is now bolstered by regaining a starting point guard and wing, both of whom can create shots for themselves and others. Their absence during last season’s playoffs accelerated the growth process for the Celtics’ talented young core. Rookie Jayson Tatum emerged as a dependable option and clutch scorer. In short, Boston was an excellent team last year that finished second in the East and made a deep playoff run, even in the absence of key players. With a healthy roster, they project to be even better this year, although some chemistry issues have shown in the early part of the season. Hayward is still finding his shot, and needs more time on the court with the starters after missing last season entirely. Presumably these issues will work themselves out during the regular season, and the Celtics still have great depth. The only major concern in that regard would be center Al Horford, the team’s oldest starter at 32, whose defense, passing skills and leadership on the court anchor this Celtics team. No bench player for Boston can do all the things Horford does. Still, count on coach Brad Stevens to get the most out of his players.

For a Bucks team that pushed the Celtics to 7 games last April, the roster overhaul this offseason was a bit more involved. The most notable loss was Jabari Parker, who signed with the Chicago Bulls, leaving questions about who might fill the apparent scoring void left in his absence. Enter new head coach Mike Budenholzer, NBA Coach of the Year in 2014-15, who immediately signed familiar system players Brook Lopez and Ersan Ilyasova to provide shooting and help space the floor, creating more room for MVP-superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo to devastate opposing defenders with his one-of-a-kind skillset. Forward Khris Middleton returns this season in the role of number 2 scorer, along with all other key contributors from last year’s squad. Rookie Donte DiVincenzo has shown promise, with hustle and what looks like a solid 3-point shot. If he can regularly bring anywhere near the level of playmaking he demonstrated in last year’s NCAA championship game, he has the potential to be an impact player for coach Bud, able to spell starters while delivering a scoring spark off the bench. Perhaps most importantly, the Bucks’ coaching change brings a new defensive philosophy that abandons previous head coach Jason Kidd’s gamble-heavy schemes, which frequently led to easy opportunities for opposing offenses. Last season’s Bucks finished 9th overall in offensive rating but only 19th defensively. While this season’s team is playing at a faster pace and scoring more, becoming even an average group on defense would be a marked improvement over last year.

Fox Sports

If we assume that both teams make it into the playoffs as expected, with rosters at or near full health, a potential matchup this season projects for even more fireworks than last year. Boston’s best self: a healthy Kyrie slashing the lane with ridiculous under-the-rim finishes, surrounded by versatile guards and wings, nearly all of whom can create for themselves, anchored by a sound defensive system and excellent coaching. They are a talented team that plays hard for a good coach, with few obvious weaknesses. On the other side is a Bucks team that will forge a new identity offensively and defensively this season. They will stay home on defense, and possess the height and length necessary to disrupt opposing teams. On offense, by moving toward a more open, 3-point shooting system, the court becomes a playground for the Greek Freak, who has yet to show us how high his ceiling goes.

Isolation basketball for league-dominating players like Giannis, James Harden, LeBron, etc. becomes a vitally powerful tool in playoff matchups. Just ask last season’s Houston Rockets, who used it to slow down the Golden State Warriors before Chris Paul’s hamstring injury in game 5 of the Western Conference Finals left them shorthanded. By creating room for Giannis to operate with shooters and playmakers around him, his volume scoring can come within the flow of the offense and allow the Bucks to dictate pace to opposing teams. Furthermore, the Greek Freak’s three-point attempts are way up this season at 4.3 per game, more than doubling last season’s average. If those shots start falling and opponents are forced to respect Giannis as a shooter, even a little, it becomes exceptionally difficult for a single defender to guard him. With space, pace and shooting surrounding a generationally-talented player, this Bucks offense under Mike Budenholzer is primed to explode.

Brew Hoop

Last season’s Bucks were a team no one in the East wanted to meet in the first round, and this season should be even better. Unlike last year, the Bucks should be able to earn home court for the playoffs’ opening series. However, a 2019 playoff clash with Boston would most likely take place in the conference finals or semi-finals, meaning home court could go either way. Boston is struggling to start this season; they are 2-2 and not playing well on either end of the court, and these early losses could come back to haunt them in the playoff seeding next spring. Meanwhile, Milwaukee hosts the Philadelphia 76ers in a possible playoff preview tomorrow night, which should provide a strong early indicator of where this unbeaten Bucks team stands in the Eastern Conference pecking order. Home court proved to be a critical factor in the series between the Bucks and Celtics last April, so both will understand the importance in pushing for every possible win throughout this season.

On paper this matchup seems to favor Boston, which should come into the 2019 playoffs as an improved version of last year’s second-best team in the East. However, once the playoffs started, that squad was tested to near its limit by a Bucks team that may not have played to its full potential under then-coach Jason Kidd. We don’t know these new Bucks quite so well yet, but their ability to score at a rapid tempo and reliance on one of the league’s preeminent talents will keep them competitive in every game. If coach Bud’s track record with the San Antonio Spurs and brilliant work with the Atlanta Hawks is any indication, he’ll find new ways to unleash the Greek Freak all season long. Once the playoffs begin, the game is all about taking things one possession at a time, when supremely gifted players can take over a game. For a Bucks team left ravenous for revenge by last season’s loss, that may be the difference-maker. When the playoffs are seeded months from now, home court may fall to either team, but we can expect both fireworks and a hard-fought battle either way. With improved offensive and defensive scheming, being able to put the ball in the hands of one of the planet’s greatest players is a pivotal advantage. In a rematch, these Bucks will be the more changed and improved team, and a close contest will become even closer. Between having the best player on the court in Giannis Antetokounmpo and the motivation from knowing how close they came last season, expect a fight from these Bucks like you’ve never seen. Bucks in 7!
